Which reminds me that I'm too old to have ever used a self-tailing winch. I was taught to free a sheet by pulling straight upwards to clear the turns quickly off a jibsheet winch - what do you do with a self-tailer to avoid getting hooked up when you're releasing in a hurry?

Skippers are responsible for ensuring a proper watch is kept, and for using all available means to stay out of the way of collision. With technology advancing so rapidly, I wonder if perhaps racing skippers will turn to technology to further minimize the risk of collision, and what forms that technology might take? Of course, there already are simple forms of technology for racers, such as clear windows sewn into the foot of a low-lying genoa, though this can fail in many instances because of its limited size, bad light conditions, UV damage and salt residues, etc.

I'd seen the 'Boot Camp' video before, but not the article. Both should be a mandatory part of any water safety course.

I reckon it is quite likely that 'Arry Driftwood' died of a heart attack. As witness his account of accidentally careering around at full throttle after hooking up the starter cord, humans have a powerful survival instinct. Great to go doing what he enjoyed.

Bill was lucky. The last person I knew that got knocked overboard by a boom went stone deaf...

He must have been a wonderful man to have around the club for so long.

I think everyone on the boat should have about the same skills. Its also good to get kids involved just in case there's some emergency, they can be familiar with the boat and won't panic and could even be helpful.

That's exactly what our family did years ago when I was feeling dessicated in the desert and wanting to buy what would be our first boat. We combined sailing lessons with pleasure by taking a half-week of basic keelboat classes in Santa Barbara, California. We also took time for leisure, with visits to a winery and a trip to Catalina Island. It worked very well to get myself, who mostly was experienced with power boats, my spouse, and then ten-year-old son a basic common set of skills and vocabulary.

Basic hull maintenance also involves checking for hull fittings every year, checking or repairing scratches and cracks each time your yacht is not on the water, checking for corrosion of bolts and bearings, and keeping hull attachments in top condition. Also, remember to always have a repair kit ready, that should contain duct tape, epoxy resin, and a paint or gel that matches your hull's color.

AT&T has a recent satellite phone that is a bit more in the affordable range, and I think satellite phones are pretty reasonable when it comes to coverage.
